Virtual/Phone
Consultation

Picture
A phone or virtual consult is a great way to communicate and troubleshoot non-complex breastfeeding issues. Often times breastfeeding parents need reassurance or reminders regarding accurate information to be able to troubleshoot issues that may arise.

Phone/virtual consultations cannot take the place of an in-person consultation and therefore we prefer to reserve phone/virtual consults to existing clients or non-complex issues only. We typically require at least one meeting in person before a phone consultation is appropriate. Sometimes, as in the pandemic, phone/virtual consultations become a necessary way of support. Please know we can work out the best means of communication for your support needs.

A written summary will be provided after your consult along with a super bill to submit to your insurance for consideration of reimbursement, depending on your plan. Complimentary message support via email/text/phone available.

Why Hire an IBCLC Lactation Consultant

The IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) Credential is the premier golden standard of Lactation Care and the only Certification for this level of Lactation Consultants.

Most insurance plans in Massachusetts recognize this professional credential and most will consider reimbursement for IBCLC services.

An IBCLC Lactation Consultant is a health care professional that is certified with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC). An IBCLC must obtain 7 college level specific health science courses as well as several additional certifying courses such as CPR, Medical Terminology, Medical Documentation, Ethics and Life Support. An IBCLC needs to perform over 1000 hours of supervised in- person breastfeeding support in addition to educational requirements specializing in the management of breastfeeding and lactation support. An IBCLC is then required to pass an extensive board exam and must recertify every 5 years. An IBCLC can practice within a hospital, clinic or private setting. An IBCLC is a health professional and considered an essential worker.

An IBCLC has extensive knowledge in the field of lactation and will work one on one with a breastfeeding couple to overcome challenges and issues that may arise during the course of lactating.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby's life, followed by continued breastfeeding (along with the introduction of complementary foods) until the baby is at least 2 years old. The support of an IBCLC can play a vital role in the longevity of breastfeeding.

Thoughts from past clients

Jennifer (mom to Charlie)

"I was referred to Teresa, owner of Peaceful Birth and Beyond by a trusted contact for help with some challenges I was having breastfeeding my two week old son. I had seen another lactation consultant who had ordered me to pump after each feeding and shook my confidence in my own body as well as my baby's ability. I was in pain everyday and starting to doubt that breastfeeding would work for me and my baby. Teresa came to my rescue; she set me on a more productive track toward my goal to breastfeed my son, enabling me to drop the arduous pumping routine and refocus on actual breastfeeding! She came to my home and patiently showed me how to position my son and myself to get the right latch and be comfortable. She explained how breastfeeding works, demystifying the process and relieving my fears about whether he was getting enough milk. She has a wonderful positive, calming energy about her and a sincerity in her approach that I found so touching and reassuring. She even took the initiative to stop by my house again to make sure I was doing okay. I would highly recommend that women seeking lactation counsel work with Teresa as soon as possible! "

"I feel so fortunate to have found Teresa through my midwife during the last half of my pregnancy. She showed deep caring, concern and love to us every step of the way. Having had a less than positive experience breastfeeding my two previous children, I made changes this time to hire support and to learn all I could about breastfeeding. I relied heavily on Teresa during the early days and weeks of breastfeeding. Teresa offered me unending support and held the highest belief in my powers to breastfeed my new baby. I know my confidence in my ability to breastfeed would not have been as strong without Teresa's support. I am forever grateful for Teresa's role in my life during that exciting and important time. "

Leena (Mom to three and hopefully more!)

"I wanted to breastfeed my third child. I had two previous births that turned very medical and breastfeeding seemed too overwhelming to me at that time. I wanted to have a different experience this time around. I found Teresa during an online search. I felt connected to her right away. I made an appointment with her to learn about what she could offer me. As it turned out, I hired her to support my 3rd birth and she was also my Lactation Counselor. She taught me more than I could have ever learned anywhere else. My birth was simply amazing and breastfeeding was the cherry on top! I am a different person today because of Teresa’s support and wisdom. I would highly recommend her!"

"I found Teresa through a complete stranger. I was standing in the grocery store in the baby aisle trying to decide which formula I should buy for my baby. I had just left the pediatrician’s office where they told me my baby wasn’t gaining enough weight and I would need to give her formula. I was very upset about this. I was stressed and tired and struggling with breastfeeding techniques. I had so many questions but no one seemed to have time for me to ask anything. I felt isolated from the rest of the world. I didn’t understand why they were telling me to supplement without helping me to learn to breastfeed. I felt rushed through every step of the way. I felt guilty and sad all at the same time. I was holding my baby in the aisle and I was crying while staring at all the varieties of formula to choose from. A woman that I didn’t even know asked me if I was “OK?". She was pushing a cart with a very pudgy baby sitting up in the front and he was obviously much older than mine. I didn’t know her, but she was kind to ask me if I was doing ok. I told her how frustrated I was to be in the formula aisle when all I ever wanted to do was to breastfeed.

She took out her phone and showed me a website called “Peaceful Birth and Beyond.” She told me to call this lady before I did anything else. She said “she is the best there is!" I went out to my car and called the number. A woman named Teresa answered. She talked calmly to me. She didn’t talk over my head and she gave me advice to follow for the rest of the day and said we could meet first thing in the morning. I felt like I had known her my whole life ! She didn’t hurry me off the phone and she didn’t make me feel like I was doing everything wrong.

I had no idea this kind of help was so important and so easy to find. I learned more in the first 10 minutes of meeting with Teresa than I learned in the 9 months of being pregnant. That one meeting changed my life as a mother. All of my family and friends saw an immediate change in my attitude and kept asking me what I was doing differently. That day in the grocery store I was in the right place at the right time. Every time I go through that aisle I think of that day and I hope to do the same for someone else some where. I never learned the name of the woman that helped me that day in the store, so if you are reading this….thank you!! Peaceful Birth and Beyond gave me the time and the tools to be the mother I was hoping to be.

Both Mother & baby benefit greatly from lactation support.

Peaceful Birth and Beyond is dedicated to improving breastfeeding rates for women of today. Despite the overwhelming health benefits for both mom and baby many women discontinue breastfeeding much earlier than they had originally planned. Many times, this decision is driven by lack of information and the absence of professional support along the way, especially in the first 4 weeks.
